In 1912, Franco-Wyoming constructed another small refinery having a capacity of 500 barrels a day. Franco-Wyoming Refinery, Casper The Franco-Wyoming Refinery was later acquired by the Midwest Oil Company which replaced it with a larger refinery on the future site of the BP Refinery on the Platte River.

Oil refining in Wyoming began in 1895. By the 1920s the state boasted 16 refineries, with Standard Oil s plant at Casper by far the largest. Production tracked oil booms and busts throughout the 20th century, culminating in the 1991 shutdown of Casper s Amoco (formerly Standard) Refinery. Six refineries remain in production today.

Casper s population rose from 2,000 to 20,000 between 1912 and 1918. By 1920 its red light district, the Sand Bar boasted a large number of prostitutes. Refining the Frontier Casper s first oil refinery was built in 1894. By the 1920s four more refineries expanded the city s refining capacity from 50 barrels to 100,000 barrels per day.

These pressures forced some diversity on the local economy, but it was a 1990s boom in coalbed methane drilling in northeastern Wyoming that revitalized Casper s drilling-services businesses.
