Soybean Processing: Operations - NOPA
NOPA members produce meal and oil from oilseeds through an extraction process, employing modern technologies to meet food safety and federal permitting requirements and ensure worker safety. Below is a standard flow chart that illustrates the various stages of a soybean as it journeys through a processing plant to become meal and oil.
NOPA - National Oilseed Processors Association
Founded in 1930, NOPA is the national trade organization located in Washington, DC representing the U.S. soybean, canola, flaxseed, safflower seed, and sunflower seed crushing industries. Our 20 members operate 73 U.S. soybean and softseed extraction plants across 20 states. NOPA members produce meal and oil used in human food, animal feed, and fuel.
Seed Preparation
The preparation of high-oil seed for expelling or direct extraction is in some steps similar to preparation system for soybeans described in Section 2 above. The oil content in the soft seeds is higher than in soybeans (it is around 40% +).
Soybean Oil Extraction Process Equipment Guide
Soybean oil processing is the process of obtaining oil from soybean seeds using mechanical pressing, solvent extraction, or advanced methods. It is a critical step in producing clean, high-quality oil for cooking, food processing, or industrial use. This process preserves the nutritional value of the oil while ensuring maximum yield.

Extraction of oil from soybeans | Journal of the American Oil Chemists
Modern processing plants extract soyabean oil by solvent liquid transfer. Soyabeans are cleaned, cracked, dehulled and conditioned into a thin flake before they enter the extractor. Extraction is by successive, countercurrent washes of hexane solvent. The extracted flakes are then carried by a sealed conveyor to be desolventized in enclosed vessels by application of jacket and sparge steam ...
